Alexander is known for his clear advice and pragmatic approach in regulatory compliance and investigations.
Alexander Dmitrenko is the managing partner of our Tokyo office and leads our Japan dispute resolution practice. With nearly two decades of experience, Alexander focuses on white-collar defense, compliance, internal investigations, and dispute resolution. He has deep experience advising on sanctions and export controls, anti-bribery and corruption, overseas investment rules, anti-money laundering, supply chain and tariffs, cybersecurity, data privacy, human rights and forced labor, and other compliance-related laws and regulations.
Alexander advises a broad range of clients, including Japanese trading houses, manufacturers, banks, private equity firms, technology companies, insurers, infrastructure players, and other corporates. He has conducted due diligence and advised on compliance program enhancements across numerous corporate transactions in the manufacturing, energy, banking, insurance, and telecommunications sectors. Clients consistently praise Alexander and his team for their pragmatic approach to establishing compliance policies and procedures, conducting due diligence, and managing internal and regulatory investigations.
Alexander and his team—including four native Chinese-speaking associates—have served as international sanctions counsel on more than five dozen Hong Kong and U.S. IPOs. Their work spans international sanctions, U.S. and other export controls, the U.S. Outbound Investment Rule, tariffs, and supply chain compliance in the context of capital markets transactions such as Hong Kong IPOs. He and the team have been consistently ranked by Chambers in the International Trade category, both individually and as a practice.
Given his distinctive cross-border skill set, Alexander has advised on major projects and investments involving Central Asia—particularly Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan—as well as Central and Eastern Europe. He is qualified in England & Wales, New York, and Russia, and is registered in Japan as a Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi with the Dai-Ni Tokyo Bar Association. He is fluent in English, French, Japanese, Russian, and Ukrainian, and serves as an Honorary Ambassador of the Island of Hachijojima.
