Introduction

Steven has significant experience in competition law across a range of sectors. He focuses on obtaining merger control and FDI clearances for high value and complex multi-jurisdictional transactions.

Steven Vaz practices UK and EU competition law, and is admitted to practice in both England & Wales and Ireland. He advises clients in a range of industries, with a particular focus on infrastructure, energy, technology, financial services and real estate.

He regularly manages merger control and FDI/national security clearances for high-value, complex, multi-jurisdictional mergers, including public company takeovers, and co-leads our global FDI practice. He has advised on several of the largest antitrust investigations and appeals in the UK and the EU.

Steven is a co-editor of the ICLG Merger Control guide. He is also co-author of Butterworths' EU and UK Cartels. He has been consistently ranked by Legal 500 as a Next Generation Partner (EU and Competition). He has been recognized a Rising Star (Top 30 Antitrust Lawyers in EMEA) by MergerLinks.

  • Brookfield | 2026 | on the sale of Freightliner Intermodal Logistics, a leading rail freight operator in the United Kingdom to the CMA CGM Group, a global player in sea, land, air, and logistics solutions.
  • Equitix | 2025 | Advised in relation to its acquisition of a substantial minority stake in Viridor Group, the UK’s leading operator of Energy-from-Waste facilities, from global investment firm KKR.
  • Sojitz Corporation | 2025 | Advised on its agreement to acquire a 50% interest in the Transport Division and the Rail, Technology and Systems Division of UGL Pty Limited from CIMIC.
  • Jefferies | 2025 | Advised on the expansion of its Global Strategic Alliance with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) to combine their Japanese equities and ECM businesses, expanding joint coverage of larger sponsors and implementing in EMEA joint origination, underwriting and execution of syndicated leveraged loans for these clients. As part of this expansion, SMBC intends to increase its equity ownership in Jefferies to up to 20% in the open market. The transaction requires EU and German merger clearances.
  • Oxford Properties | 2025 | On its disposal of a 50% stake in a €840 million European industrial and logistic portfolio and in M7 Real Estate, the market leading European investment and asset management business, to Australian Super to create a joint venture of 76 assets in the UK, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain.
  • Tritax Big Box REIT plc | 2025 | Advised on its £1.035 billion acquisition of a logistics portfolio from Blackstone funds. 
  • The investors | 2025 | Advised on Eelpower Energy, a UK battery storage platform, which will build, own, and operate grid-scale battery storage assets and aims to deliver over 1GW of new battery storage capacity for the UK grid. 
  • Tritax Big Box REIT plc | 2024 | Advised on its £3.9 billion all-share offer for UK Commercial Property REIT Limited.
  • Electricity North West | 2024 | Advised the sellers in relation to the sale of 88% of Electricity North West (a regulated Distribution Network Operator) to Iberdrola SA for an enterprise value of €5 billion. 
  • General Atlantic | 2024 | On its entry into a definitive agreement to acquire Actis, a leading global investor in sustainable infrastructure to create a diversified, global investment platform with $96 billion in combined assets under management.
  • Equitix | 2023 In relation to the merger of MapleCo and Calisen to create the largest energy smart metering business in the UK, which was unconditionally cleared by the CMA and by regulators in four other jurisdictions. 
  • Concentrix | 2023 On European aspects of its $4.8 billion acquisition of Webhelp,
  • Clinigen Group plc | 2022 On its £1.2 billion recommended offer from Triton Investment Management Limited.
