Introduction
Gaelan is the managing partner of our Perth office and a banking and finance partner with a focus on project financings in energy and resources.
Gaelan Cooney has extensive banking and finance experience, practicing in the areas of project, corporate, leveraged, property and asset finance. He acts for borrowers and lenders, with a particular focus acting for sponsors on project financings in the energy and resources sector.
- Arafura Resources | Lead Partner | ongoing | Advised on a US$1,150 million secured loan facility from NAIF, EFA, ECD, Euler-Hermes, KEXIM and commercial banks, and a A$200 million convertible note from NRFC, for the development and construction of the Nolans rare earths project located in the Northern Territory.
- Black Rock Mining | Lead Partner | ongoing | Advised on a senior project financing and a subordinated prepayment and offtake facility provided for the Mahenge graphite project located in Tanzania.
- Sandfire Resources Limited | Lead Partner | 2025 | Advised Sandfire on a US$650 million unsecured corporate facility provided by a syndicate of 11 banks.
- Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility | Lead Partner | 2023 | Advised on a US$300 million secured loan facility from NAIF and EFA for the development of Hasting's rare earths project located in Western Australia.
- Orion Resources Fund | Lead Partner | 2024 | Advised on a US$165 million debt and equity funding package to Leichhardt Industrial Group for it to acquire the Lake Macleod salt mine in Western Australia.
- Cargill | Lead Partner | 2023 | Advised on a secured prepayment and offtake facility for Northern Iron for the development of the Warrego magnetite project located in the Northern Territory.
- Pacific Energy | Lead Partner | 2023 | Advised on an A$860 million corporate facility including a green loan provided by a syndicate of banks.
- Thunderbird Operations | Lead Partner | 2022 | Advised on an A$160 million secured loan from Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility and a US$110 million secured loan from Orion for the development and construction of the Thunderbird Mineral Sands Project located in the North of Western Australia.
- Banks | Lead Partner | 2022 | Advised on A$1.5 billion club facilities for Woodside.
- JERA | Lead Partner | 2022 | Advised on a secured prepayment and offtake facility for a private coal project in New South Wales.
