Introduction

Mike Webb is a partner in our Projects Energy Environmental and Resources group, focused on renewable energy and energy transition projects.

Mike has extensive experience working on energy projects in several jurisdictions, most notably in Australia, Asia-Pacific, South Africa and across Africa.

Mike's experience covers project development (including M&A, corporate structuring, due diligence, joint development/shareholder agreements); project documents (including construction and operation agreements); power purchase agreements (including retailer/corporate PPAs, and proxy revenue swaps, on either a bespoke or ISDA basis); energy regulatory, including in relation to the National Electricity Market; carbon markets and the trading of carbon credits; and managing and coordinating the debt financing of large-scale energy projects, including the interplay between finance and project documents.


  • Australian Renewable Energy Company: advised on:
    • successful LTESA bid in relation to the 415 MW / 1660 MWh large-scale grid battery located in NSW as well as the broader project development (including a virtual tolling agreement with EA).
    • its successful bid to develop, own and operate a 850 MW / 1,680 MWh battery project located in NSW.
    • the development of the 150MW / 300MWh BESS and the 200MW / 400 MWh BESS including in relation to a revenue share agreement.
  • Leading Australian Energy Company: advised on the acquisition of a portfolio of BESS and solar PV projects from a battery project developer.
  • Sembcorp Industries: on its acquisition of Alinta Energy from Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited. The transaction, valued at A$6.5 billion, will give Sembcorp full ownership of Alinta Energy, a leading energy retailer and generator in Australia.
  • Ausgrid: on the procurement of the Steel River BESS located in NSW including sale and purchase and LTSA agreements.
  • Revera Energy (previously known as Amp Energy): on the development and project financing for Stage 1 of the Bungama BESS, the first BESS in Australia financed on a fully merchant basis.
  • Eku Energy: on the successful bid to deliver the ACT Big Canberra Battery, a 250MW / 500MWh utility scale battery project. Also advised on Eku Energy and Shell’s Rangebank BESS 250 MW / 500 MWh.
  • Eku Energy/Shell: on the EPC and long-term service contracts for the 200MW / 400MWH Rangebank BESS project including on procurement contracts with Fluence as EPC.
  • Leading Australian Bank: in respect of the project financing of a 15 MW hydrogen electrolyzer combined with a solar PV and BESS project located in NSW for the purposes of creating green ammonia.
  • Cbus Property | Advised on its participation as an off-taker in the Melbourne Renewable Energy Buyer Project 2.0, including the negotiation of its Retail Supply Agreement and LGC Supply Agreement. *
  • Siemens Project Ventures | Advice in relation to the acquisition of an equity interest in the 1200MW Forest Wind Farm in Queensland.
