Introduction

Michael is a lawyer for environment, planning, climate change, mining and related matters, especially in Western Australia and South Australia.

Michael works with clients to develop energy, resources, industrial and infrastructure projects, manage operations and liabilities and complete commercial transactions. He particularly assists with interaction with government and community stakeholders.

His experience includes with legal issues associated with building, clearing, climate change, contamination, electricity, heritage (Indigenous and non-indigenous), local government, native title, planning, renewable energy, waste, water and other government regulation.

Through his career Michael has developed extensive knowledge and experience in these areas, working on some of Australia and Western Australia’s most significant projects and with leading clients.

  • Australian Renewable Energy Hub | 2022 – ongoing | Assisting with environment and approval matters for the Australian Renewable Energy Hub project, a significant renewable energy project.
  • Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners | 2021 – 2025 | Advised on approvals and tenure support for Murchison Green Hydrogen Project, including successfully representing MGH in objecting to mining tenement applications by other parties in the WA Mining Warden's Court.
  • Hancock Iron Ore | 2021 – ongoing | Assisting with environmental and related matters for the Roy Hill iron ore mine, rail and port operations.
  • Leading Global Multinational Mining Company | 2021 – ongoing | Advising on various environmental, approval and related matters for WA iron ore operations, including for the mine expansion major environmental approval processes.
  • Leading Global Multinational Mining Company | 2021 – ongoing | Advising on environmental approval and mining tenure matters for the development of a major new copper gold project in Western Australia.
  • Leading Global Multinational Mining Company | 2021 – ongoing | Advising on closure matters, including for a diamond mine closure in Western Australia.
  • Woodside | 2021 – ongoing | Assisting with new energy and carbon offset business matters, including secondment from July 2022 to January 2023.
  • Woodside | Lead partner | 2022 – ongoing | Supporting for managing greenhouse gas emissions liability of Woodside's operated joint ventures, by drafting and negotiating commercial agreements. We have assist for the North West Shelf (NWS), Vincent/Enfield, Pyrenees, Macedon and Pluto offshore joint ventures.
