Introduction

Joseph draws on his background in physics in his work with clients and colleagues in the firm’s Patent Prosecution & Portfolio Counseling practice.

Joseph Merritt, Ph.D., has experience in computational physics, quantum information, and solid-state materials. His technical background includes machine learning, AI, Python, C++, high performance computing, and cloud computing. His graduate work involved research into quantum algorithms, quantum error-correction codes, topological materials, and condensed matter theory. As a patent agent, his practice involves drafting and prosecuting patent applications in technological fields including machine learning, agentic AI architectures, telecommunications, and quantum computing hardware and software. Joseph also performs patent analysis to identify high-value and low-value assets for patent portfolio optimization.

As a doctoral researcher, Joseph developed quantum simulation software, including designing algorithms and writing original code optimized for high-performance computing hardware. His project management responsibilities included ownership of the development pipeline and making critical decisions for algorithm development and optimization. He has also earned certifications in deep learning, neural networks, natural language processing, and scientific computing.
