Introduction
Guy is an experienced environmental lawyer who advises and acts for clients in relation to both transactions and litigation, and who has a focus on matters related to resources, renewables and climate change.
Guy is a lawyer with deep knowledge and experience in all aspects of environmental law, including planning approval pathways for major projects, biodiversity, Aboriginal cultural heritage, compulsory acquisition and valuation of land, pollution and contaminated land, environmental due diligence, waste and water. He advises and acts for clients in both transactional and litigation settings, especially for clients in the resources, renewable energy and commercial development sectors.
In addition to these traditional aspects of environmental law, Guy also advises and acts for clients on matters relating to climate change law, especially as it relates to carbon capture and storage and carbon markets.
Guy also maintains an active involvement in academic and pro bono activities in this area, serving as an updating editor for environmental law loose-leaf services produced by Thomson Reuters and contributing publications to academic texts and journals.
- Regis Resources Limited | Lead Partner | 2024-present | Acting in judicial review proceedings commenced by Regis in the Federal Court challenging the validity of a declaration made by the Minister for the Environment under section 10 of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984 (Cth) in respect of the area of Kings Plains that is the site of an approved tailings storage facility).
- Newmont Corporation | Lead Partner | 2024-2025 | Acted in prosecution proceedings commenced by the NSW EPA in the Land and Environment Court alleging two breaches of s 126 of the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (NSW) concerning alleged failures to handle tailings in a "proper and efficient" manner to prevent or mitigate dust lift off events (pleas of not guilty having been entered) – the matter was settled in December 2025 by way of an enforceable undertaking.
- Global chemical and mining company | Lead Partner | 2024-present | Advising on various environmental, planning and regulatory approval issues associated with its mineral sands mining operations in NSW.
- Global CCS Institute | Lead Partner | 2024-present | Advising on various CCS regulatory matters.
- Oil and gas association | Lead Partner | 2025-present | Advising on a multi-jurisdictional regulatory survey and analysis of transfer of license and liability for the storage of CO2 as a consequence of operating CCS projects.
- Australian energy company | Lead Partner | 2025 | Advising on requirements of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011 as concerning development of a carbon offsets project in NSW (and Australia), including assisting with all land and carbon development agreement documentation.
- Petroleum company | 2024-2025 | Advising on environmental approvals and providing due diligence for client's proposed investment in Western Australian offshore gas project.
- Government trading enterprise | 2025-present | Advising on Aboriginal heritage matters as concerning a section 10 declaration made by an Aboriginal person under section 10 of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984 (Cth) over particular areas of land in Western Australia.
- Multinational automotives company | 2025 | Advising on requirements associated with the introduction of industrial chemicals into Australia under the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019 (Cth).
- Mining client | Lead Partner | 2024-present | Advising on various environmental, planning and regulatory approval issues associated with the development of the an underground mine and associated solar farm in NSW.
