Gareth Hughes is a partner in our dispute resolution practice, based in Hong Kong.  Gareth focuses on major commercial litigation, international arbitration and white collar / regulatory defense matters. 

With over 26 years’ experience in Asia, Gareth advises major corporates, financial institutions and high net worth individuals in connection with complex commercial disputes, often with a cross-border component to them.  His work has encompassed financial services, corporate finance, private wealth, fraud, private equity, insurance, judicial review and shareholder related matters. His matters involve proceedings in the courts or before arbitral institutions, including arbitrations under the HKIAC, LCIA, SIAC, CIETAC, UNCITRAL and ICC rules.

Gareth also advises on internal and regulatory investigations, including in particular those involving the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the Independent Commission Against Corruption. 

Gareth has become one of Asia’s most respected and experienced litigators. The Legal 500 Asia Pacific lists him in its Hall of Fame, and he is also a ranked individual for dispute resolution in Chambers Asia-Pacific and Chambers Global. Lawdragon recognizes him as one of the 500 leading global litigators, and Benchmark Litigation (Asia-Pacific) names him a Dispute Resolution Star. Gareth was recognized as one of the "ALB Litigators of Asia 2024" curated by Asian Legal Business and was nominated by ALB as one of the Dispute Resolution Lawyers of the Year for Hong Kong in 2024.

  • Acting for one of the largest Chinese based asset managers on a US$1.6 billion private equity dispute involving ICC and HKIAC proceedings and parallel litigation in seven jurisdictions including Hong Kong*.
  • Acting for numerous financial institutions and their respective employees on various investigations by the Securities and Futures Commission and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in relation to sponsorship roles, mis-selling, insider dealing, market manipulation and internal controls failures, including responding to dawn raids and ensuing investigations. 
  • Acting for two high profile individuals in defending proceedings before the Market Misconduct Tribunal relating to allegations of insider dealing and breach of disclosure requirements for public announcements.
  • Acting for a Dutch finance company in an HKIAC arbitration against its Hong Kong based investment manager, including a successful application under the HKIAC's Early Determination Procedure*. 
  • Acting for a major cloud mining and blockchain service provider in relation to a dispute under a share purchase agreement entered into with a former majority shareholder*.
  • Acting as international counsel in conjunction with a leading local law firm for a leading Japanese car manufacturer in relation to allegations of corruption and related investigations by the Thai authorities regarding its operations in Thailand*.
  • Acting for a leading asset manager in proceedings in Hong Kong against a former senior executive relating to carry and allegations of breach of duty*.
  • Acting for a leading insurance company in Hong Kong on an investigation by the ICAC (and ensuing internal investigation) into allegations of bribery and corruption relating to a senior executive in Hong Kong*.
  • Acting for Shiu Wing Steel Limited in proceedings commenced by its joint venture partner claiming wrongful termination of the relevant agreement, including successfully having an interim injunction set aside*.
  • Acting for China Energy Reserve and Chemical Group Overseas Company Limited in defending proceedings commenced against it by a bondholder seeking to enforce its rights under the Bond*.
