Michael focuses on construction and engineering law for major infrastructure and renewable energy projects, advising government, funders, sponsors and contractors.
Michael J Smith is a senior consultant in our projects, energy, environment and resources practice.
Michael focuses on the construction aspects of major infrastructure project procurement (including UK PFI/PPP projects), domestic and international EPC contracting and all other areas of non-contentious construction and engineering law, with a particular focus on the renewable energy sector, including small modular nuclear reactors, energy from waste, solar and on and offshore wind farm development.
His clients include the UK Government, funders, sponsors and contractors. Michael has advised on nationally significant infrastructure projects including the UK Government's small modular nuclear reactor procurement program, the £4 billion Thames Tideway Tunnel project, the £16 billion Hinkley Point C nuclear power project, the HS2 rail project and the Mersey Gateway Bridge project.
- Great Britain Energy - Nuclear | Advised in relation to the UK Government's procurement of small modular nuclear reactor power stations.
- China General Nuclear | Advised in relation to its investment in the Hinkley Point C nuclear power project.
- Orsted (formerly Dong Energy A/S) as the developer of the West of Duddon Sands (500 MW) and Westermost Rough (210 MW) offshore wind farms.
- Lenders Group | Advised in relation to the 950 MW Moray Firth East and the 850 MW Moray Firth West offshore wind farm projects.
- Siemens Wind Power as the Wind Turbine Supplier for the Lynn and Inner Dowsing (180 MW), Rhyl Flats (90 MW), Greater Gabbard (500 MW), London Array (630 MW) and Lincs (500 MW) offshore wind farms.
- Encyclis and Cory | Advised in relation to the Rookery, Earls Gate, Newhurst, Protos, Walsll and Riverside 1 & 2 EFW projects and the Protos and Riverside 2 Carbon Capture and Storage projects
- Samsung C&T | Advised on the restructuring of the Bibiyana and Siddhirganj CCGT projects in Bangladesh.
- Centrica plc | Advised on the development of an 800MW gas turbine combined cycle generating station at Language in Devon.
- City of Edinburgh Council | Advised on the Newhaven extension of the Edinburgh Tram System.
- Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs ("DEFRA") | Advised in relation to the three main works packages (and associated alliancing arrangements) for the £4 billion Thames Tideway Tunnel project.
