UK – ACCESS Commercial Law
We understand that breaking into the legal profession can be challenging, especially for students without existing connections or prior exposure to the sector. Through our ACCESS Commercial Law program, we are committed to widening access to the legal sector and creating clear routes into careers at the firm. The program targets secondary school students from across the UK who come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds and have an interest in commercial law.
Program Overview
- Virtual Panel Discussions: You will participate in a series of interactive virtual discussions with representatives from Ashurst Perkins Coie and our clients. These sessions will enhance your understanding of commercial law and equip you with essential skills for your path to becoming a commercial solicitor.
- 1:1 Mentoring: You will be matched with a career mentor from Ashurst Perkins Coie during the program, which will provide you with greater insight into a career in law, as well as guidance on taking the next steps into higher education or employment.
- Ongoing Support: You will have the opportunity to be matched with a university student mentor and will also receive ongoing support from the Social Impact team and representatives from Ashurst Perkins Coie to help you with your future steps.
Access to Technology
The program will be run virtually, ensuring you can participate no matter your geographic location. You will require access to the internet and a computer, laptop, or mobile device (such as a tablet or mobile phone) to take part. All sessions will take place during school term-time and shortly after the school day, meaning you have the option to join from home or school. If you are interested in the program but have any concerns about being able to access it, please contact us. We are committed to supporting you to access this opportunity and would be happy to discuss ways in which we can help.
Note: Applications for our 2025/26 program have now closed. Applications for our 2026/27 program will open on 1 September 2026.

Important information
We are passionate about reaching students who will benefit most from this opportunity and use Rare Recruitment's contextual recruitment system (CRS) to support us with our recruitment decisions in relation to applying the above 'additional criteria'. The CRS allows us to understand your achievements in the context in which they have been gained. We seek to recruit the best people, from every background, regardless of their personal circumstances, and the CRS help us to do that.
If you are (or have been) looked after, accommodated or in care, you only need to meet the school year requirement listed in the Eligibility requirements section.
There is room on the application form to explain any extenuating circumstances that might impact your application.
These above additional criteria are not exhaustive and may be amended over time.
Our short application form will include a question asking you about your interest in a career in commercial law, Ashurst Perkins Coie and the program.
Top tips
- Make sure you allow plenty of time to complete the application form.
- Include time at the end to carefully proofread your application before submitting.
- Draft your application in Microsoft Word to make use of the spelling and grammar checker.
- Spend time researching Ashurst Perkins Coie and the type of law we specialize in and remember to mention why this type of law interests you.
- Use the word limit as guidance for how much you should write and remember to back up your statements with relevant research and examples.
- Try to avoid long sentences where these are not needed. Short sentences are easier to read and will help you to get your point across more clearly.
- Use generative AI tools mindfully. AI can enhance your application, but ensure any AI-altered content is thoroughly reviewed and edited before submission. AI should complement your efforts to authentically represent yourself, your experience, and your enthusiasm for the role, not replace your thoughts or create them for you.
- And finally, don't be tempted to copy and paste from our website. We want to read your own words and not ours.
After the application closing date, we will ask you to complete an online assessment. The assessment measures a range of critical reasoning and behavioral strengths that align to a trainee solicitor or solicitor apprentice role at Ashurst Perkins Coie. The assessment has been designed to give you a realistic preview into life at Ashurst Perkins Coie and the types of scenarios you might experience as a junior legal professional.
While we recommend completing the online assessment in one sitting, it is untimed so you can complete it at your own pace. It will take around 60 minutes to complete, and you will have 5 days to complete the test once from the time you receive the link. Once completed, you’ll be sent an individual feedback report outlining your key strengths and development areas.
You can learn about the types of questions you may be asked in the assessment at our Preparation Hub.

Testimonials
"The program webinars have been really insightful in regard to pathways into law. I feel equipped with top tips to secure an apprenticeship, traineeship, or interviews. Also, hearing from professionals from all stages, such as trainees to qualified lawyers, has been really helpful in ensuring I know what to expect from a legal career. Lastly, particularly the first webinar has made me more confident in what sector of law I want to work in, by educating me thoroughly in what type of work commercial lawyers do daily."

Engaging with professionals who shared their social mobility journeys made pursuing a legal career feel attainable."
Program participant from London
"The program has played a huge role in demystifying careers in commercial law and addressing misconceptions about work in the legal sector. It has helped me to understand different career pathways, the nature of work in the commercial sector and the session on recruitment top tips was invaluable in informing my approach to future applications. Going forward, I feel more prepared and confident to apply to schemes with firms, having learnt through interactions with legal professionals as part of the program that there is no one specific 'type' of person that is suitable to be a lawyer."
