With over 25 years' experience as a leading global Employment lawyer, Stephen Woodbury is known for his in-depth knowledge of the challenges facing the modern workplace, and in assisting clients meet those challenges.
Ashurst Perkins Coie's Co-Global Practice Head for Employment, Stephen advises a broad range of first tier international and domestic clients on strategic and complex industrial and employment related matters including advisory, regulatory, investigation and litigation work.
Stephen is ranked as a leading practitioner in Employment law in Chambers, Legal 500 and Best Lawyers Australia. He works with clients in a range of industries, including the retail, transport, higher education, resources, food, manufacturing and technology industries.
His experience working with clients to achieve commercial outcomes in employment-related matters includes:
- All aspects of collective bargaining and workplace relations, including negotiations with unions, management of industrial action, as well as Federal Court, Fair Work Commission and other court and tribunal litigation.
- Workplace investigations and risk management.
- Regulatory and compliance matters, including related class actions and inquiries and Royal Commissions.
- Managing executive employment issues (including post-employment restraint matters).
- Corporate restructuring, sale and outsourcing programs.
- Disciplinary proceedings, dealing with ill and injured employees and claims of discrimination, breach of contract or independent contractor arrangements, adverse action, unfair and unlawful dismissal.
Stephen appears as an advocate in employment tribunals and courts and speaks regularly at seminars and conference on topics related to employment and industrial relations law.
- Mars Kellanova | Advising Mars and Kellanova on integrations issues following their global merger and various strategic industrial relations and employment-related matters.
- Sony Music Entertainment | Advising Sony Music in relation to employee-related matters, organizational change and regulatory compliance.
- FedEx | Advised and represented FedEx in relation to enterprise bargaining in connection with employees, independent contractor arrangements and impacts of legislative changes in the road transport industry.
- Various retail, hospitality and fast-food clients | Advising in relation to identified underpayments, including engagement with the regulator, employees and unions, remediation processes, and compliance going forward. Representing in proceedings commenced by the regulator and related class action proceedings concerning underpayments to salaried employees.
- McDonalds Australia | Advising on claims brought by employees against McDonald's and its licensees in Federal Court proceedings, which include a class action.
- University of Sydney | Advising in relation to various regulatory and compliance issues, including regulator investigations and inquiries, Federal Court proceedings, compliance with enterprise agreements and legislative requirements.
- Natixis Australia | Advising in relation to strategic review of Australian operations and structure and management of issues concerning restructure of operations.
- Nine Entertainment | Advising Board in relation to confidential matters and assisting with management of cultural review and related issues.
