Rani is recognized for her depth of experience, strategic insight and commercial nous in advising on commercial disputes, regulatory enforcement and investigations.
Rani John assists clients with complex commercial disputes, regulatory enforcement and internal investigations. Her experience includes representing major corporates, financial institutions and senior executives in: high-profile commercial and trade practices litigation; regulatory investigations and follow-on civil and criminal litigation, including investigations and litigation concerning alleged insider trading, market manipulation, continuous disclosure breaches, mis-selling, and anti-competitive conduct; and anti-bribery and corruption investigations.
Rani is recognized in multiple independent directories, including Chambers Global, Asia Pacific Legal 500 and Doyles Guide, for her acumen in white collar crime, corporate investigations and complex disputes. She was one of 100 women worldwide selected for inclusion in Global Investigation Review’s inaugural "Women in Investigations“ survey. Clients have described her as "commercially savvy" and a "fierce and determined litigator, noted for her confidence-inspiring tactical instincts and good judgment".
- Global real estate investor and asset manager | Acting in NSW Supreme Court proceedings against managers of other property trusts and related entities, regarding transactions in the course of a contested proposal to acquire all the units of a property trust managed by one of those other managers.
- James Packer, CPH Crown Pty Limited (the then major shareholder in Crown Limited) and other CPH executives | Representing those clients in the high profile NSW Inquiry, Victorian Royal Commission and West Australian Royal Commissions regarding Crown's Australian casinos. The inquiries examined a broad range of topics relating to Crown, including allegations about the involvement of Crown's business associates in money laundering, breach of gambling laws and other organized crime; risk and governance issues; and the regulatory framework for casinos and gaming.
- Noumi Limited (formerly Freedom Foods Group Limited) | Acting for Noumi in an internal investigation, ASIC investigation and civil penalty proceedings against Noumi and two of its former officers for contravention of continuous disclosure obligations.
- Global investment bank | Representing the bank in a dispute with a former service provider regarding claimed fees payable on termination of the agreement with the service provider.
- Former CEO of a major Australian financial institution | Representing that client in connection with an ASIC investigation regarding fees charged for wealth advisory services (achieving no action letter).
- Prosecution witnesses | Representing prosecution witnesses (executives of global investment bank) in high-profile criminal cartel prosecution.
- Global investment bank | Representing the bank in an ASIC investigation regarding suspected market manipulation involving certain of its equity traders. Achieved no action confirmation.
- Potential prosecution witness (and former executive) | Representing the executive in relation to the prosecution of other former executives for foreign bribery offences.
