Chris Bates advises primarily on high-value, complex technology and commercial contracts which have a transformative impact on his clients' businesses.

Chris has extensive experience in advising on technology related matters of all varieties, both as stand-alone transactions and as specific aspects of wider arrangements and is increasingly active in facilitating long term and strategic partnerships as part of his clients' digital transformation agendas. He is a trusted adviser to key clients of the firm on their most significant commercial and technology-based mandates.

Chris operates across numerous sectors, including financial services, governments, nuclear technology, automotive and sport. He also devotes a substantial portion of his practice to working on M&A transactions in the technology sector, spearheading the work on the complex separation and technology aspects of those deals, and on the sourcing of business-critical IT infrastructure and related technology.

Chris also advises extensively in the defense and security sector, representing key defense industry players in high value defense procurements with the UK Ministry of Defense. He is particularly sought after for his expertise in UK Single Source Contracting, having regularly advised Tier 1 defense contractors on the area since the introduction of the Defense Reform Act and Single Source Contract Regulations in 2014.

Chris is recognized by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 as one of the top technology and sourcing lawyers in the country, and is one of only a handful of lawyers to be inducted into Legal 500's Hall of Fame for IT.

  • The Department for Business and Trade | Advised on the complete end-to-end creation of the Future Fund, an emergency loan scheme launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the design, build, test and operation of an end-to-end digital administration solution (including a SaaS-based customer portal), as well as the ultimate in-sourcing of the solution back to British Business Financial Services Limited.
  • Nomura Holdings Inc| Nomura Holdings International in relation to numerous global technology procurements and IT infrastructure outsourcings, with counterparties including Cisco, Bloomberg and IPC.
  • Equitix and Calisen | Advising in relation to various electricity and gas smart metering acquisitions and commercial contracts for the roll-out of smart meters with Big 6 energy providers across the UK.
  • Infineum LLC | Advising on the procurement of systems integration expertise for the upgrade of its SAP ERP system to S/4 HANA.
  • Babcock International Group PLC | Advising in relation to its support arrangements with the UK Ministry of Defense in respect of the upkeep of naval bases in Devonport and Clyde, and the maintenance of the MoD's fleet of surface warships and nuclear submarines.
  • The International Stock Exchange | Advising on the design and development of TISE's private capital trading platform.
  • McLaren Automotive Limited | Advising on numerous technology and supply chain commercial contracts to support McLaren's production of elite road vehicles.
  • A Confidential Financial Services Client | Advising in relation to the client's defense of claims by Oracle Corporation of unlicensed usage, and negotiating settlement agreements and go-forward licensing arrangements with Oracle.
  • A Global Retail Bank | Advising in relation to the financing of the franchising operations in the UK of various fast food companies, including Popeye's Chicken and Five Guys.
  • An NHS Trust | Advising on the reprocurement of its electronic patient record system, the platform which forms the backbone of the Trust's administrative back office systems, from Epic Systems Inc.
